Whenever I get yet another health craze I alway seem to wanna eliminate all the ‘bad’ and ‘unhealthy’ food from my diet in order to establish balance and get rid of sugar cravings (yeah I get them too). But still I somehow never seem to include the elimination of my own sweet creations.
It’s not that all of my sweet recipes are filled with only veggies or fruits and are totally sugar free, but to be honest you need a free pas to succeed this mission, and as long as I know how much sugar, fruit and chocolate I stuff in my head I am okay with it. On the other hand I actually do make some desserts which I would even have for breakfast, and that kinda qualifies it as actual meals, thumbs up! Lately this popular chocolate cake and these pancakes have been making it as breakfast and to be honest this banana bread often sneaks in as well.
As long as we are on this healthy dessert-breakfast track there is a recipe I really need to introduce. A healthy and filling chocolate & peanut butter shake – you could almost call it a chocolate smoothie – say what! Yes, it is as good as it sounds and tastes even better + it’s filled with lovely nutrients and some immune boosting components!
The truth is that you could actually drink this shake at any time. It is a perfect breakfast, especially topped with berries and rolled oats or granola, but it is just as lovely served as a dessert or as a quick snack during the day.
As always you can vary the recipe as you pleases. The quick and simple version requires your favourite chocolate milk, this way you can make it dairy free and vegan (I use a skimmed and sugar-free version). But you could also go the more natural way and use any kind of milk combined with sweetener of your choice and some high quality cocoa.
Add ins are peanut butter, cocoa powder, cocoa nibs and vanilla and you can choose to use what you want, but do yourself a favour and try all of it combined. Especially the cocoa nibs since they add a lovely crunch and a very rich and deep chocolate flavour. And you gotta remember that all of the lovely flavonoid and phenols which have a lot of health benefits (read more about this here) comes from the pure cocoa bean, so you’ll get all the health benefits without the extra sugar and fat that comes from chocolate.
Sometimes when I am in a hurry or short on ingredients I make it with only banana, chocolate milk, strawberries and ice cubes which leads to a more simple version but still being absolutely delicious.
So if you like me feel like drinking chocolate all day long – okay that might not be the best idea, but still – you should try this dreamy, almost heavenly chocolate shake and you’ll never ever again feel lost when craving chocolate…
Choco shake w. strawberries & peanutbutter
Makes 1 big glas or 2 small
3/4 cup chocolate milk, preferable organic and high quality (200-250 ml)
3-4 frozen strawberries
4-6 ice cubes
1 tsp high quality cocoa powder
1/2 tsp vanilla extract or beans from 1/2 pod
1 tsp peanut butter (can be substituted with 8 soaked almonds)
1 Tbsp cocoa nibs (optional)
TIP: If you don’t wanna use chocolate milk you can substitute it with; 3/4 milk + 1 Tbsp cocoa powder + 1-2 Tbsp honey/agave
Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
Serve the shake with fresh/frozen berries and a little fresh mint. You could also sprinkle some cocoa nibs on top or just serve it as it is. Either way it will be super delicious and highly addictive.
